Teachers writing in a second language – rambling
April 1, 2008How does living and working in a society which runs in a different language affect teachers? Is their professional development affected? Do teachers living overseas or working in another language give up on reflective writing or do they do it in their mother tongue?
With our pupils we are already trained to say content and ideas first, mechanics afterwards, why don’t we take our own advice.
For many years I put my writing self aside because I was embarrassed to expose the mistakes I was making in spelling and sentence structure. For a long time writing was seen by me as a real chore, one I simply wasn’t good at. My husband got sick of correcting every report card and letter to parents, although he never complained or made me feel bad!
If I had been aware of the importance of private writing for PD maybe I would have written, exposure was my problem, not the composition itself.
